Declutter Series: Grocery Budget, Week II

My family and I made it through the November’s Declutter Challenge under budget for the second week in a row! And, I only made 2 grocery stops this week! I was a little on the lax, aka lazy, side this second week on cooking but I am happy to announce I still managed to stay under budget. The savings is not as big as the first week but I will take it.  Read Week 1 here.

Just a recap, I started this challenge to declutter my grocery budget and kitchen. I have a tendency to buy more food than needed because we typically cook based on cravings before, especially when hubby is grocery shopping with me. He loves to cook and is more adventurous with recipes than I am, which typically means we buy ingredients we don’t normally use or probably won’t use again. Some of the items just carry on to the next month and the next until it expires. This November month, I am making a conscious effort to incorporate what I have available at home in the 3 meals I prepare for myself and my family every day with the hope that I can finally declutter my kitchen of space-occupying items and save in the process. A new year is coming. It’s time to step up my habits.

Final Words

Moving onto the 3rd week, I still have leftovers in the fridge from this second week. I don’t mind eating leftovers and it shows on the meal break down above. My fridge gets packed and I will need to find more ways to recycle the leftovers moving forward. My freezer is clearing up though. Pantry is still tight, but it’s small to begin with, not a walk in or anything close to a type of closet. I also ate, quite obviously, way too much carbs. I think I need to declutter my vegan diet too. I’m on the roll, why not?! Haha

I will say meal planning for the whole week has helped me stay under budget this week and will continue on the following week. This is a habit I am going to be adopting permanently. I do enjoy the visual reminder to keep me focus, and as a plus, my kitchen will stay more organized than typically in the past.

Staying under budget for the third week might get tricky since Thanksgiving weekend is up ahead; however, we will also be eating our fair share out to celebrate my mom’s 70th birthday. She is finally home from Europe. Next you know, I will be decluttering my Outing Expense too! Haha. But as you can see from last month’s food diary and this week’s and last week’s declutter post, we don’t really eat out that much. So, a celebration like my mom’s 70th is a pretty good reason to get dolled up and eat out.

How do you prepare for the coming of the new year?

Until next time.
