An alternative to cable subscription.

The reality for me on a one-income household is that we can not try every single new technology that streamlines. I would love to; but, I simply can’t afford to, at this time. Luckily for me, the times are evolving and my city’s public library is offering to loan technological gadgets for free. One of these loaner gadgets I borrowed was the Roku Streaming Stick.

I recently downgraded my cable TV to nil and purchased a Netflix streaming membership in replace of. While I do not get the live news feeds I normally do when I did have a cable subscription, I do still have access to current events online. I kept my internet but removed the cable channels. So far so good.

Though vast in choices, Netflix streaming has its limits. Live news for example. I do enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the news on TV before I start my day, for example. So, I’m on a lookout for free legal movie and TV show viewing, which is why my interest in the Roku Streaming Stick.

Here’s how you can try the Roku Streaming Stick for free.

You need to:

  • have a Virginia Beach public library membership, which is free for VB residents and a small fee for visitors
  • reserve it online or at a library branch, which is free
  • pick it up once it’s ready from a  librarian at the checkout counter, which is free
  • return it, or renew if possible, after the allotted 3 weeks is up with a librarian at the checkout counter, which is free
  • *Check with your local library if Roku is available to loan at your location.

The package contained 5 items: a Roku Stick, remote, charge plug, charge cable and instructions. I needed to furnish 2 AAA batteries myself for the remote. Once I plugged the Roku stick onto my tv and turned the tv on, the Roku Stick automatically comes on.

Here’s my experience with it.

Downloading onto the Roku stick has been disabled by the library. I can not buy or rent a TV show or movie onto the Roku Stick. Not to worry, you will see below that there are sufficient titles and networks available for viewing, enough to warrant a trial.

There are 13 preset networks available on the Home screen. Here are the current line up on each as of May 19, 2018:

1. Movies & TV- VUDU. Not all the available movies and TV shows shown here are available for free viewing. Also, some free titles have advertisement. As tempting as it is to buy and load a movie I want to see, especial since there is a category called “In Theaters, Films Available before DVD”, the loaner Roku stick has been disabled to accept new content. The categories are the following: (The FREEbies are what’s available for viewing.)

13. Hoopla. You will need to sign up to a Hoopla account online to access this channel, made available for free by the VB public library. You will need a public library account to create an online account. Once you sign up online, Roku will give you a code to link to your online account to get this channel up and running. With an account, you can listen to audio books or music, watch movies or TV shows, or read ebook/comics. It is powered by local libraries worldwide.

Final Words.

Unfortunately for me, ABC network is not available for viewing on this free Roku Streaming Stick version. I do miss my Dancing with the Stars. It’s one of the shows I enjoy watching with the kids. Watching the show live is much better than seeing a recording of the episodes online. For now, I make do without my cable channels. Roku Streaming Stick will definitely be a great additional tool to combat the loss of cable channels.

I plan to borrow this again in the summer months to entertain the kids. While I do intend to spend a great amount of time outdoors, outdoors do mean spending $$$ as well. This is a good free entertainment option for me as I will need some downtime from the money and energy zapping activities. I’m not shy to admit it, I don’t have the same energy as I did in my 20s, or 30s. I definitely squeeze naps when needed.

What benefits does your local library offer?  It might be worth checking out.

Until next time.

  1. I always forget that my library has a great movie collection. I’ll have to check if they have a Roku. For ABC, you might be able to use a cheap antenna, or you can replace Netflix with Hulu. Hulu doesn’t have as many movies as Netflix, but you can watch most network tv shows the day after they air.

    1. You are my very first comment on my blog! Very cool of you to take the time to stop by and read my post. I have not tried Hulu but I have seen advertisements for it and I might look more into it now that you mentioned it, as well as an antenna. And yes, the library has so much to offer. I have only been taking more advantage of the benefits this year. Previous, I have only used it for borrowing books and downloading music. I do love to read and am enjoying reading blogs, such as yours. Looking forward to reading more of your work.
